Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

MACKSVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL IS PREPARING TO WELCOME TOUR DE CURE

The 10th annual Tour de Cure 2016 Signature Tour will visit Macksville Public School on Wednesday 4^th May this week.

The team of more than 200 riders, support crew and corporate partners are fundraising, educating schoolkids and presenting vital funding grants to community cancer support projects over the 1518km tour route. The Channel 7 Sunrise team should be here too.

The team will present our students with the 'BE FIT, BE HEALTHY, BE HAPPY' cancer prevention message, aiming to show how 1 in 3 cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices.

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia and will touch most Australians at some point in their lifetime. Since 2007, leading Australian charity organisation, Tour de Cure, has raised over $20-million to raise awareness and help cure cancer.

Tour de Cure Managing Director Matt Clarke said, "Regional communities are often forgotten when it comes to health education and funding for cancer projects".

Community members are invited to attend schools for the presentations. So please feel free to come and join us for this exciting event!

This annual fundraiser is traditionally supported through donations of hamper items and/or gold coin donations. If you could donate a gift or non perishable food item for this years Xmas hamper, it would be greatly appreciated. The more donations…...the bigger the prizes!

‘Raffle Book Order Forms' will be sent home with your children and you must fill one in and return it to school if you would like to buy and/or sell raffle tickets. Alternatively, you can print a raffle book order form out from the document attached below. The books will be sent home with your children. Raffle books must be returned sold or unsold by Monday 30th November and the winners will be drawn on Presentation Day, Friday 4th December.

Please ensure when sending money that it is placed in an envelope CLEARLY marked with your child's name, class and whether it is for raffle tickets or a donation.

Raffle tickets will be priced at $1 each or 3 for $2.

The Life Education Program will be visiting Macksville Public School on Friday 28 ^thAugust and Monday 31 ^stAugust. Only classes from Kindergarten to Year 2 are timetabled to attend this very important program. The Life Education Program supports the PE/Health/PD syllabus and presents education on ‘Making Healthy Choices'. The cost of visiting the Life Education Van is $6.00. Students will also receive a booklet to accompany the lessons covered in the van so that follow-up lessons may continue in the classroom. If you require another permission note for your child, please click on the permission notes tab then click on visiting performances.

Just a reminder to parents that all payments for the visiting performance, 'Heidi Hodeo Circus Rodeo' must be in by this Friday, 25th July. The performance will be next Monday 28th July however NO payments can be made on the day of the show.

Class Information Sessions for parents

Over the next week or so most class teachers will be conducting a 'meet & greet' session for parents. During this time the teacher will outline classroom routines and expectations and will also answer any questions that you may have as a parent. This is a great opportunity not only for you to get to know a new teacher but to also meet some of the other parents in your child's class.

A note will be sent home with your child outlining the details and times of the class session. Please also check your child's class web-page for a note with further information, as some teachers have asked for one to be placed there also. Class web-pages can be found under the 'school years' tab then follow the links to your child's class.

A big welcome back for 2014 to all our students and families. We're looking forward to an amazing year. Our first adventure for 2014 is the Swimming Carnival which will be Monday 3rd Feb (next Monday). Notes have been sent home to all students from Year 3-6. Very proficient 8 year old swimmers from Year 2 are also eligible to come to the carnival. If your child has not brought a note home, one can be found under the permission notes tab on this website.

2013 School Evaluation.

Being the Family School, your opinion is important to us and we would like to take the opportunity for our school community to participate in some surveys. The surveys are distributed every year and the data is then collated and analysed to provide, not only feedback to the school, but help us to plan future directions through our Whole School Evaluation.

This year, as National Partnerships Funding comes to an end, we will revisit the same ‘School Culture' survey that we sent out in 2009 (at the beginning of National Partnerships) for comparison.

Jeans For Genes Day

Tomorrow, Friday 2nd August, is Jeans for Genes Day. Please wear your jeans to school (and normal school shirt), bring along a gold coin donation and know that you are supporting a great cause. The SRC kids will collect your donations in class.

Everyone who donates a gold coin will receive a Jeans for Genes stationary set worth $10. Just another good reason to support this cause.

All extra donations will also be gratefully accepted.

MPS Time Capsules 25 years on!

Bicentennial Times Capsules

Please come and join us for this historic event during Education Week on Wednesday 31st July. The time capsule opening will take place from 10.30am however there is also the Library Book Fair from 8.30am, Open Classrooms from 9.30am and our Education Week Assembly from 11.45am to enjoy.

In 1988 as a part of the Bicentennial Celebrations, MPS families, staff and community members had the opportunity to create a time capsule full of personal memorabilia. These capsules have been stored in the roof of our library for the last 25 years!

All the people who created a time capsule 25 years ago have been invited to join us for Education Week to open them with us.

There is great excitement to see just what's in the capsules! Also a selection of student's artwork from 1988 will also be on display.

NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition

Open from 10am -2.30pm, there will be traditional art works by our students following a painting on bark theme. We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963. There will also be a beautiful selection of local Aboriginal artworks. A not to be missed event, held in our New Hall.

Mother's Day Stall

Our Mother's Day stall is run by volunteers from our P&C every year and is a wonderful fund-raising event. This year the stall will be held Thursday 9th May. If your child would like to purchase a Mother's Day present, please send them in with between $1 & $10 this Thursday. A plastic bag is also handy so they have something to put their present in to take home.

ANZAC Day March

We will still be marching as a school for ANZAC Day even though the day itself falls during the holidays. Last year we had over 100 students turn up to march and we couldn't have been prouder. The 2013 Showtime spectacular is nearly here! Showcasing that amazing talent we have in the 10 Public Schools in our valley, Showtime promises to enthral you all once again. At the new location of Nambucca Heads High School, the outdoor venue will add even more atmosphere to this amazing event!

"Grand Champion"
YEAH! Our Picasso Cow was awarded the title of "Grand Champion" last Thursday at the Dairy Australia Conference held at Opal Cove in Coffs Harbour. Miss Yates, Mrs Clogan and 15 students attended the viewing of the nine cows across the Region and had a chance to see the amazing work submitted by all the participating schools. There was some fabulous learning by the students, and the games and day highlighted the facts and knowledge gained by the students involved throughout the program. It was a fun day for everyone, and Macksville P.S. came home with the prize and the acknowledgement of the great work they had done! Congratulations to Stage 3 for committing to the project and also to the whole school who incorporated the theme of "From Farm to Plate" into their classrooms.

Come one come all! We just love a chance to show off what our kids can do at Macksville Public School and Education Week is a great opportunity. We invite, welcome and recommend that all our families and members of our community come into the school and see what we're all about. Here's what is happening this week:

Wednesday 1st August

- Library Book Fair from 8.30am - here's where you can purchase a book for the school with all donated books carrying an acknowledgement of your contribution in the front cover

- Playground Performances 9.30am - loads to see as we showcase just some of our talent! Come along and see our Circus Troupe, 4C singing, 4T singing, Year 2 dancing and Year 3 dancing!

- Open Classrooms 10.30am - Parents and families are welcomed into the classrooms so the students can have a chance to show you their beautiful work.

- Families join their children for morning tea 11.10am - join in the fun atmosphere of our playground, bring something to nibble on and join your kids for morning tea.

Thursday 2nd August

- Education Week Assembly 2pm - At this assembly we will be presenting our Athletics Trophies as well as this month's Beez Neez awards. We will also be thrilled by Mrs Bradley's Dance Group an a wonderful performance by 3H.

So, lots to choose from, come along and support your kids, our school and Education Week! We look forward to seeing you all.

Relay For Life Disco

Remember that Thursday is our Relay For Life day. We have a tireless team of parents who raise money every year to help fund cancer research and we are proud to support them in their efforts. So let's get behind them and do our bit as every little bit helps!

Thursday is a mufti day at only the cost of a gold coin donation.
Stage 1 disco will be held from 2.00-3.10pm.............. cost $2
Stage 2 disco with DJ will be held from 5-6.30pm......cost $4
Stage 3 disco with DJ will be held from 7-8.30pm......cost $4

Stage 1 children can bring all their money in (disco & mufti) in with them on the day to be handed in in the morning.

Could Stage 2 & 3 children please bring their mufti gold coin donation money in the morning to be handed in and please pay for their disco when they come back later in the evening.

Let's dance hard, have some fun and raise some money for a worthy cause!!

Our school photo days for 2012 will be Thursday 7th June & Friday 8th June. This week families should have received home their individual photo envelopes. These envelopes need to be completed and returned to school prior to the school photo days. If you have any concerns or have not received your child's envelope, please contact the front office.

Year 6 Excursion Update

When our Year 6 students return from their excursion next Wednesday 30th May we ask that parents please organise a buddy system whereby one parent rings the school and then contacts other parents when finding out the expected return time of the bus. This just keeps the number of phone calls to the office to a minimum.

Please remember to be at the school promptly at 6.45am on Monday so that the bus can depart on schedule at 7am.

We expect to return at 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Over the next three Wednesdays, were are thrilled to welcome Nambucca/Bellingen Family Support Services who will hold the "Triple P" Parenting Course. This course includes every day tips for everyday parents, it's FREE and everyone is welcome to attend. Parents, grandparents, carers, relatives and friends all have something to gain from this widely popular course. We are very lucky to have this widely recognised course at our school and even in our district.

Easter Celebrations at MPS!

Come one come all and join in on all the fun of our annual traditional Easter Hat Parade and Monster Raffle! Kicking off at 9.30am, you can join us at school or line the streets from 10am and watch the kids parade through the town or why not do both? 2012 Kindergarten Transition

Welcome to our Transition Days for Kindergarten 2012! We're looking forward to meeting everyone and getting to know you as you become a part of our 'family school'.

10-11am: Our first transition day, 17th November, our new Kinders will be split into three groups and will have the opportunity to get to know our Kindergarten teachers. Parents are very welcome to stay for support and reassurance.

10-11am: On the second Transition day, 24th November, our new Kinders will meet their Year 6 buddies who will stay with them during the first few weeks next year. This is a great opportunity for a discussion in the Library for any questions parents may have.

9:30-11am: On the third Transition day, 1st December, there will be an Orientation morning in our New Hall where parents have the opportunity to meet various staff members who will be a part of your child's education.

BOOKWEEK 2011

This week we are celebrating Book Week! With great excitement, we can't wait to see what the kids come dressed as for their discos. This years theme is "One World Many Stories". All children are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character.

Our Infants parade will be held this Friday in the infants quadrangle and we look forward to welcoming some of our local preschools as well.

Homework Heroes

Our Learning & Community Centre (LCC) runs an after school homework program on Wednesdays from 3.10-4.00pm. Our 'Homework Heroes' access assistance for their Maths and English homework and are encouraged to utilise one of our four Internet connected computers to assist with project completion. Our local high school students are welcome to come and take advantage of this facility. Homework gets done in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere!

Showtime, what a hit!

With a packed stadium, our kids confidently took to the stage last Friday night. They wowed the audience with their circus act, dance performance and recorder ensemble. It was fantastic to see them front and centre for the mass choir which involved over 500 children from all over the Nambucca Valley. See our albums page for more photos!

Friday 29th July

Traditional Indigenous Games (TIG) are used in traditional society to develop essential skills needed for hunting and survival. These days we play TIG with modern equipment and have loads of fun too! One of the many great things abut TIG is that any age can play and it always brings a smile to everyone's faces. This Friday we are thrilled to also be joined by our local preschools too. Come along and watch us play on the oval.

Bush Tucker Day

Gumbaynggirr Language Workshop

Uncle Michael Jarrett will run a parent and community workshop in local Gumbaynggirr language. This workshop is open to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. So come along and see what our students are learning in their Gumbaynggirr lessons. If we know Uncle Michael, a few good belly laughs are bound to be had too!!

Communal Hall Official Opening

Parents, families and friends of Macksville Public School are warmly invited to the official opening of our new Communal Hall at 10am on Friday 20th May. Constructed as part of the Building Revolution, our hall is now a focal point of Macksville Public School and is a valuable asset to our students, staff, parents and broader community. Senator Michael Forshaw will officiate at the ceremony and will unveil a plaque to commemorate this historic event. The program will include performances by KG, KB, 5S and our recorder group.

Kindergarten Orientation

Macksville Public School's Kindergarten Orientation for our new Kinders of 2011 will be held this Thursday, 25 November from 9.30am to 11am. Following our transition days over the past few weeks, our new Kinders will have the chance to 'fly solo' in the kindergarten classrooms for the first time whilst parents are treated to a fashion parade of uniforms by our current Kinders and be introduced to our school staff who will support your children throughout their years at Macksville Public School. We extend a very warm welcome to the newest members of our Macksville Public School Family and we are looking forward to getting to know you and working together as a team for the personal and academic development of your children.
